Elephants are the biggest land animal. They have very thick skin to keep cool. Their trunk may have more than 40,000 muscles inside it. Males can grow up to 5 – 14 feet at the shoulders. Their staple diet is grasses, leaves, bark and roots. They also have been known to eat farmers crops.
Elephants love water and will stay in it until the matriach leads them out. Elephants make 5 types of noises, the grunt, bellow, whistle, trumpet and purr. Elephants live up to 70 years old and spend up to 16 hours a day eating. Elephants live in tight social units and have the biggest brains in the animal kingdom. They can walk 4 miles per hour. Elephants have small eyes and have poor sight, but a great sense of smell. Elephants are very good swimmers and can swim for long distances. Because elephants are a very large animal they need to eat a lot. Elephants can eat up to 495 pounds of food a day, that’s a lot.
Male elephants leave the herd at the age of 12 to 15, in the rainy season they find a mate. To win a mate, male elephants need big srong ivory tusks and will need to keep a close eye on the female to avoid other males mating with her again. The matriach is an old cow or female that leads the herd, she is often the wisest and knows the area well. Elephants are very clever, so clever they can feel water vibrations through the ground and can find it, dig it up and drink it. Elephants were not always elephants though, elephants evolved from mammoths, which means they have been around for millions of years, and I hope they will be around for many more.
