The Destruction of Sennacherib
“The Assyrian came down like the wolf on the fold, and his cohorts were gleaming in purple and gold …”
This is the first line of the poem “The Destruction of Sennacherib” that was written by George Gordon Byron, about the war between the Assyrians and the kingdom of Judah in 705 B.C. I learnt and memorised the six stanza poem this year. The Assyrian king Sennacherib had wiped out every single nation that had come in his way. Now it was the people of the kingdom of Judah’s turn. The king of Jerusalem Hezekiah told his people to rely on their God. Sennacherib sent a cup bearer to tell the people of Judah, that they had no chance of victory. Jerusalem was like a bird in a cage, surrounded by the Assyrians. But the Assyrians never entered Jerusalem “For the angel of death spread his wings on the blast, And breathed on the face of the foe as he passed; And the eyes of the sleepers waxed deadly and chill, And their heats but onced heaved and forever grew still” 185,000 Assyrian soldiers died in their tents…”and the tents were silent the banners alone, the lances unlifted, the trumpet unblown.” Sennacherib went back to Assryia where he was killed by his two sons.
