Fonterra Science Roadshow!!!
On Tuesday the 18th everybody in the two senior classes at our school went to a science roadshow. The roadshow was held at Raumati beach school, we left at five to nine in the morning after taking roll. After a short bus ride we were there. Once outside the school we were greeted by a woman working in the roadshow called Jamie.
When we were inside the hall we looked around and saw numerous displays about different category’s there was ones about
- Astronomy,
- Earth Science,
- Farming,
- Forces,
- Light,
- and the Human body.
The first thing we did was watch a demonstration about The Hidden World,it showed us why we leave behind a heat print and what would happen if we saw everything in heat vision. As part of a demonstration James went up and put a glove on one hand and had to lye both of his hands on the counter. After five minutes he took his hands off and we looked the heat marks he left behind, the hand with the glove on it showed up colder then his other hand because the glove kept the heat in instead of letting it out.
After the demonstration we were told about a contest we could enter if we showed we understood a exhibit with a flag next to it. Vicky and I were the only ones to enter from our school. We showed we understood a exhibit that was about speed and weight. There was also a challenge that everyone got to do, you got an I.D tag and had to show it to three scanners around the room, each scanner gave you a clue and you had to guess what scientific occupation you had in the future. I was a electronic technician.
Then we got to go look at the exhibits. Since our science study was light this term everyone paid careful attention to the light exhibits. To me there were three that stood out.
The first one of them was a box and when you looked into it you saw black but when you opened it the box was yellow on the inside, this is because when there was no light in the box you couldn’t see anything because when you look at something to see it light has to bounce off the object into your eye.
The second was a colour wheel, the circumference of the circle was about 62.8, and it was split into seven sections, there was a handle and when you spun it it turned white, this is because white light is made up of the colours of the rainbow.
The third and final one was a picture of a car done in red, blue, and yellow, when they were alone the pictures stayed the same but when you crossed them over each other they made a picture were every thing was the right colour.
When we had been looking around the different exhibits for around forty-five minutes we sat down to watch another demonstration this time about Spectacular Changes, we learned about physical and chemical changes, we watched water become Raro, then Grape juice, then Lemonade, then Coke, then back to water this was a chemical change. We also watched someone burn a piece of paper and rip a piece of paper and were asked which was the physical and chemical change. You would be surprised, but burning a piece of paper is not making it have a physical change, when we riped it we changed what it was from one piece of paper to two.

I really enjoyed the science roadshow, it was fantastic. I and a load of other people learnt a whole lot of new things not just from the demonstrations but also from the exhibits. My favourite exhibit was building an arched bridge which demonstrated the force of pressure and gravity. My favourite demonstration was when demonstrator took a piece of fresh parsley and dipped it into liquid nitrogen freezing it, and then shattering it to pieces with his hands; the demonstration was showing physical change. What was your favourite demonstration?
