Kids for Kids

Hi all hope you had a great time at (Kids for Kids).

We arrived at the SOUTHWARDS CAR MUSEUM, and we  were put into lines of heights tallest to smallest. I was one of the ones at the back I was too tall to sit next to my friends. :( . We walked into the the big space that had rows of chairs all the way down to the stage, special  Kids for Kids chairs. We sat in the rows of chairs that over looked the stage. From the schools that were yelled out there were, Raumati Beach school, College street Normal school, Fair-field school, Paraparaumu Beach school, and last of all St Patrick’s. We were all called up to come on stage in the rows we were in. The row I came in had the number 6 row.  As we were sitting on our chairs/platform, the guy from (FUNKY MONKEY) comes out, every one yells and cheers for him. He does his little talk and introduces the lovely JACKIE CLARK.  She gets a big round of applause, she comes out with her fancy walk (YAY WOW HI HI HELLO) everyone says in big voices. We start of with warming up our vocal cords lalalalalalalal mmmmmmmmmmm haaaaaaaaaaaaaa. And on. We start with some actions with the song singing along to it.  We do a few more songs, then we get sent away for morning tea, while we are eating the soloist got to go up and audition, Courtney comes back with some great news.  She gets a duet singing part. well we all know that Tash and Simone were the only ones that got to do the ukulele playing and they were great!!!. We came back on stage, got some points from the sound desk our highest score 10 billion. (WOW). After that day of practising we had to go back to school (oh man nooooo).

But we came back eventually at 6:45 pm,  I was one of the ones that came early, I was waiting, then finally someone I can talk to, I said to Petra.  Then every one comes bursting through the door. We get ready to  take a picture. And we’re finally on stage singing with all our soul. lalalalalalalalalalalala.     It comes to half time, everyone is busting to go to the toilet and it’s loud with lots of voices saying how good it was. “I can’t wait to go back on” someone said.

We arrive one very last time with our voices singing out to the audience.  While we are in the second part of the second half we watch a little video for the poor people needing help. This little girl gets asked to show off the t-shirt, and then some more songs to do.  For our last song we sing as powerful as we can.

Describe A Moment in Time Writing

'Stinson Beach' photo (c) 2006, Alex Pearson - license: http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/2.0/

When planning for a descriptive piece of moment in time writing – think……………

What can be seen? heard? felt? smelt? tasted?

What is being said? thought? done?

When draft writing, plan for (organise) ……………

An opening statement that provides the reader with a clear idea about what this text is about and engages the reader – an interesting hook in.

The main body of the text – this part describes aspects of the photograph that gives the reader a sense of ‘being there’.

An ending – something to close off the piece of writing that leaves your reader feeling satisfied.

A moment in time piece of writing is:

  • written in the present tense. (mostly)
  • uses vivid, lively words – strong action words – a wise use of adjectives
  • may use similes or metaphors
  • Has details – that draw on our senses – sight, hearing, sounds, touch, smell

Tone.

Either be factual and objective. OR

Informal and subjective that draws the reader into the scene.

What tone do you think would best suit the photograph above?

The Strange Case of Origami Yoda Series

The Strange Case of Origami Yoda Series is a great series that I would recommend to ANYBODY to read, as it’s a great series. The series is mainly about Dwight, Tommy, Kellen, Harvey, and all their other school mates, but it’s mostly these 4 that are the main characters in the series. Dwight is an odd person, as he likes to dig holes in his backyard and sit in them, he also says “Purple” a lot, and for that he gets sent to ISS (In-School Suspension). But he does one cool thing, he makes Origami, and Origami Yoda was the best thing he made, and he also gives GREAT advice.

The first 3 Books (as ART2-D2′s book isn’t released until 26th March 2013, and it’s about making Origami and Doodling) are CASE FILES, and they all start with a question. The first question (and the only one I’m going to share because it may SPOIL them) is: Is Origami Yoda Real?

As I said, Origami Yoda gives great advice, Darth Paper likes to ‘wreck havoc’, the Fortune Wookiee gives, well, less helpful advice then Yoda, (and is translated by Han Foldo as Chewbacca only speaks Wookie), and I have no idea about ART2-D2, as like I said, it’s released on the 26th.

As you can tell, the post isn’t too big, but this isn’t over YET! Here are some Photos/Pictures of how to make some Origami Star Wars.

Admiral Ackbar

This is where I got the Origami Instructions from this link here and the Admiral Ackbar instructions are under the photo of Admiral Ackbar if you scroll down the page.So these to instructions should do the trick. If you can’t, well your obviously not as good as Dwight. So anyway that ends the Origami Yoda post, please attempt to make the origami, and then leave a comment to tell me how you did, and just remember when making Origami,

Daniel

Digital Learning

This year some of the people in our class are bringing their own digital devices to school.  This means that when you are say writing in daily five,  you will always find a free computer to use. Although I don’t have one myself (but I am getting one later in the year)  I am still enjoying it because now the are enough computers for every one.

When I say digital devices, this means iPods, iPhones, laptops and even iPads! Of course we are bringing them here for learning. So, that means no game playing!

Here you can see someone getting down to work on their laptop.

Another happy learner.

Finally you can see this student using an Ipod.

So there you have it, more and more people in the classroom are using digital learning, and maybe after a good ten years it might be considererd strange to use a pencil and paper.

Cherub Series 2 Book 1 Review (People’s Republic)

It is not James Adams anymore it is… Ryan Sharma AKA (Mission name) Ryan   Brasker.

A new hero, a new mission… in this thrilling new series Ryan Sharma, has been asked to go undercover to take down the Aramov clan, the biggest criminal empire in the world they have a reputation to deliver anything, anywhere, anytime. And to do so he must befriend Ethan Aramov son to the daughter of Irena Aramov (leader of the criminal empire).

I recommend, mainly to boys that like a good thrilling action adventure… if you liked Alex Rider you will like this, not for the squeamish.

In this thrilling new action adventure

Will Ryan be able to befriend Ethan?

Will Ryan be able to take down the Aramov Clan?

For official purposes, these children do not exist!

Maori Greetings

A class in South Africa (Miss Tyler Smith’s class) asked us to teach them how to say some words in Maori, so Natasha and Sahara and I got together to make a video for them, demonstrating some basic Maori. Here it is, I hope you enjoy it!

Week One 2013

Here are a few snapshots of some of the things we did during week one.

The First School Day of 2013

So before school started, Jordan came in to help deliver Brooke to her new room.  Jordan starts college tomorrow. All the best Jordan.

In the background by my computer you can see the beautiful speakers Teegan gave us  when she left in 2012.  We used them today, so easy to hear those book trailers we watched.

I am holding one of those mugs Emma gave me at the end of 2012. So everytime I drink that must have cup of coffee before school starts I am reminded of Emma.

Computers

Until we have discussed the use of computers, they will not be used in the classroom on the first day, at least not first thing.

Therefore if you are planning to bring your own computer, leave it at home for the first day, as there is a form that needs to be read and signed at home before you start using them at school.   I think the new wireless system still has to be installed by Norcom as well.

When you arrive you will notice we have three new computers, and Mr Elms is seeing what he can do to speed up the laptops, so it doesn’t take half an hour to get from one page to the next.
