Okay for Now.

We have almost finished Okay for Now. What have you enjoyed – what have you been thinking as we read this story? Would you read another book by Gary Schmidt? Why?

Here is an interview with the author that gives us his insight into the book.

Free Rice

Free rice is a website that I came across during the blogging challenge. Free rice lets you answer questions on a variety of Topics like flags of the world, multiplication, vocabulary and french. Every answer you get right they donate 10 grains of rice to help end hunger. So far I have donated 6110 grains of rice! Free Rice is a great way to learn new things and make a little difference in the world.

Vote for Squirrel’s name

As you know we will be having a visit by squirrel in the last week of term – hope he/she arrives on time. We are being asked to participate in naming squirrel, so get to and vote! You may have to vote from home, I am not sure how it will work once someone votes from school, we will have to try it out.

Also this blog might be a great place to leave those quality comments.

Quality Commenting

In week one and two we discussed quality commenting. I am delighted to note that there is some excellent quality commenting going on from some of you. Well done.

Here are the set of slides so that you can refresh your skills about commenting. I will also put them on the separate commenting page for easy access as the year goes by.

Going Sailing

Today some of Room 8 have gone out learning to sail.  I just met a Dad down there who said, “We never did that in our day!”  Sadly I have to say they never did it in mine either.  It looks heaps of fun.  Well done those who chose to go.

A Place to Comment

As you know I have set you the task of writing three quality comments a week.

One on the class blog. (Thank you Antonio, Jordan and Emma for being first).

One on a student blog in the school – and paste that into a word document in a Commenting folder within your named folder. Date the copied comment.

One to  a student outside our school – and paste that comment into the word document to keep a record.  Its a good idea to record where you made that comment as you may need to go back and reply to the comment the person has made back to you.

Here is one place to start commenting outside our school.

New School Year Begins

We are now two days into the new term.  So here we are settling into our Room 8 classroom yesterday.

Sorting books and things into our individual buckets!

And some exercise books into shared containers.

And down to work !

How are you finding the new school year?  What do you like or dislike about our new space?  What’s your feelings and thoughts around our buckets?

Any other ideas you would like to share and how these might be put in place?

Writer Notebook

There will be an extra one, leave that at home until you find out which one you run out of, and then that can be used. It is best to buy them now because of the bargains in stationery at this time of the year.  You will have two Mathematics books, label both and bring with you to school.

These people already have their Writer Notebook at school as we kept it here at school.

Please place your name on things like glue sticks, scissors, earphones.  Please place your earphones in plastic ziploc bag and label the bag with your name.

Large boxes of tissues do not need naming.  We keep these together and use them throughout the year.  Please hand them in to me on arrival the first morning so I can tick your name off the list.

If you have any questions, please leave a comment.
