Free Rice
Free rice is a website that I came across during the blogging challenge. Free rice lets you answer questions on a variety of Topics like flags of the world, multiplication, vocabulary and french. Every answer you get right they donate 10 grains of rice to help end hunger. So far I have donated 6110 grains of rice! Free Rice is a great way to learn new things and make a little difference in the world.

Did they get a Fair Go?
Today we started on our topic unit for the term. We are learning about:
consumer problems,
how to make sense of consumer laws and regulations,
our rights and responsibilities as consumers
how to make a complaint about faulty goods to a trader.
Here is the start of our topic – buying mixture to blow the biggest and best bubble.
World Read Aloud Day.
Yesterday we read aloud to our buddies as it was World Read Aloud Day. “Hear” are some of the photos.
NZ Post Shortlist 2012
Here is a link to the NZ Post Children’s Book Awards 2012 shortlist. Start reading and then you will be able to vote.
And here are our teams for the Mastermind event that will take place in early Term 2. Reading of the books will start very soon. We have bought some already and some I have put on reserve at the library. We will need three copies as we have three teams! I will put in the date when I find it out when the actual day of the mastermind is. A lot of close reading is needed.
Senior Teams: Yes we have two teams, and almost had enough for three teams.

Vote for Squirrel’s name
As you know we will be having a visit by squirrel in the last week of term – hope he/she arrives on time. We are being asked to participate in naming squirrel, so get to and vote! You may have to vote from home, I am not sure how it will work once someone votes from school, we will have to try it out.
Also this blog might be a great place to leave those quality comments.
Learn about HCF and LCM
If you are needing some help with figuring out the highest common factor and the least common multiple of numbers, a few of the boys in the class have made a video to help you sort it out. There is one error in their presentation – can you spot it?
Subtraction of Large Numbers.
We have learned about using various mental strategies for smaller numbers. Now Teegan and Simone show how we might manage larger numbers for solving subtraction with whole numbers.
As you will have noticed it’s not all serious.
Quality Commenting
In week one and two we discussed quality commenting. I am delighted to note that there is some excellent quality commenting going on from some of you. Well done.
Here are the set of slides so that you can refresh your skills about commenting. I will also put them on the separate commenting page for easy access as the year goes by.
