where learning rocks!

15 000 Views!

Looking back over time I notice that a book trailer made a couple of years ago has received 15000 views on You Tube. Now that is a big audience!

Nice work Simone.

Welcome Back To Term 4

Are you ready to start a new term adventure? Let’s Go!

We will be sharing the new book by Rob Buyea, Mr Terupt Falls Again. It was published on the 9th of October and should reach our classroom in a week or two at the most. That will give us time to refresh our minds about the characters so that we are ready to read!

I hope you have all been reading over the two week break, I read Mark of Athena by Rick Riordan, and I noticed on Goodreads that a few of you have been too.  What else have you all been reading?

This term we have speeches, details of the parent night date have yet to be decided, but it is time to get started. It will be mainly work at home, or you can use writing time during Daily Five if you choose.  If you are going between home and school, I suggest you use google docs.

Topics are:

Yr 4-6
My sport hero and how they influence my life.

or….

Kapiti coast is a great place for kids to grow up.

Yr 7-8
Kapiti coast is a great place for kids to grow up.

or…

Students need their own digital device for learning these days.

There will be a lot more happening – see you Monday to talk about it.

Girls Talk Books.

And here are the girls doing their book talks while we explored how to use a green screen. Thanks all for your help.

Boys Talking Books.

While most of the students have been away at ski camp, those that were left tried out green screening with videos. While this exercise was mainly about finding out if we could get green screening to work, we also have great books to share!

Alex Rider Mission 1: Stormbreaker

A visit from the police at three o’clock in the morning is never good news. For fourteen year old Alex Rider it was no where near good news. His only relative left had died in what the police had said described as a car crash. Alex was only left with the housekeeper, Jack his best friend. In the following days Alex meets his uncle’s (Ian Rider’s) work mate and boss. Wanting to know more about the death of Ian Rider, Alex goes to see the car at the breakers yard. There Alex discovers the truth but in doing so gets himself into a job he does not like.

This book Alex Rider Mission 1: Stormbreaker written by Anthony Horowitz is the first book in the Alex Rider series. I recommend this book to people who enjoy adventure, mystery and challenges. I am really enjoying this book and hope you enjoy it too.

Book Quiz – Mastermind

Mr Terupt – 9th October.

Mr Terupt Falls Again will be out on the 9th of October. That will add another 10 days to get it to us, so that will mean two months for it to be read aloud in class. I think that is doable!

NZ Post Shortlist 2012

Here is a link to the NZ Post Children’s Book Awards 2012 shortlist.  Start reading and then you will be able to vote.

And here are our teams for the Mastermind event that will take place in early Term 2. Reading of the books will start very soon. We have bought some already and some I have put on reserve at the library.  We will need three copies as we have three teams!  I will put in the date when I find it out when the actual day of the mastermind is.  A lot of close reading is needed.

Senior Teams:  Yes we have two teams, and almost had enough for three teams.

Book Thoughts.

Below is a video made by some students about books being read in the class. We didn’t have time to completely finish it or view it before the school year ended, but here it is anyway. I think they would have learned a number of things and will notice a range of ideas to develop. So here it is, nice work team.

What will you read these holidays?

I have a list so long it would take me longer than 2012 to get them all read. However these are the ones I intend reading over the summer holidays.

War Horse is the one I have started already, it is by Michael Morpurgo.  It was first published in 1982.  It is told from the horses point of view and is about a powerful friendship between an owner and his horse Joey.  It takes place during World War 1.

The second one is Stormbreaker by Anthony Horowitz. I know this series has been popular with some of my students in the past so I want to find out what they like about it.  It was published in 2000 so it has been around awhile.

Son of Neptune is next on my list.  I read the first one earlier in the month and couldn’t resist buying this one while I was in the book shop.  This belongs to the Heroes of Olympus second series.  It was published in 2011.

This is a rather unusual book that I found out about from some teachers online.  It is a rather large hardback and is a little different from most books.  It contains two stories 50 years apart. One is told in words, the other pictures.  They eventually link. That is all I know until I read it. Published in 2011.

I would also like but don’t yet have sitting beside me a few other books.  One is a graphic novel that I have heard good things about.  Anya’s Ghost by Vera Brosgol.

Our Only May Amelia by Jennifer Holm  is the other book I would like to read when I get it.  It was written a number of years ago, but the author has written a follow up just recently.  So I will need to read this one first!

So…. how about you?   What are your reading plans for the holiday break? I would love to know.

I do know that Daniel hopes to be reading one of my choices after Christmas has hopefully delivered the book!
